I ended up using debootstrap, which didn't work properly, so I had to
chroot to a copy of the root directory on a CF card, dpkg-reconfigure
all the packages, etc., but now there's a (hopefully) rather clean
flashable installation of Debian/sarge at
http://zdebian.dyndns.org/
It's raw, it's big, and it hasn't got much useful software on it, but
it's a good basis for building a Debian-based system, I hope. It also
proves to me that the kernel needs a lot of work still. The SHARP
kernel patch is simply a bunch of dirty hacks which needs to be
cleaned up.
I'm now only hoping that emdebian gets off the ground soon.
