Package removal is often something where a user will manually check
why it gets removed.
Assuming package dependencies ensure that a new gnome-shell will result
in removal of incompatible extensions, a standalone src+bin package
would give the user the option to defer the upgrade , but the aggregated
package would silently drop the incompatible extension leaving the user
without a required/wanted extension.
