Evolution supports quite a number of extension points, so you probably
don’t need to patch it for such a simple change. You can use
evolution-dev to build an extension that can be installed separately and
enabled at runtime.

You can have a look at evolution-rss, which is, although already a bit
complex, a good example of a standalone extension with a few UI changes.
