Thank you, that did the trick!  (Although I needed to delete
icon-theme.cache rather than icon-theme-cache.)

Is there a bug number in the BTS that I can refer to if someone else
runs into this problem?  If not, could someone file it?  (Not me, I
don't know enough about the problem to write a coherent bug report.)
