It seems that I am able to add panels to both "sides" of the display -
in other words, a panel for the left LCD potion of the desktop, and
another for the right CRT portion. With window lists on both, they each
respectively show the windows drawn on their side.

The problem with this set up is that I often run the machine without a
plugged in CRT - i.e. with only the LCD, and with twinview off. When I
do, the dual panel setup probably will not look so good. Anyone know of
an easy way to change the gnome desktop and panel setup/layout in a
script (or to switch between predefined panel/desktop "profiles")? I
assume the configuration is saved in gconf under 
/apps/panel somewhere?
