Quick question, are you using LDAP for authentication (or anything that
is not PAM with flat files?).

xscreensaver used to give me a lot of headaches when I set it to lock
the screen and I type the password for a user that comes from an LDAP
backend. It worked great for previous releases and at some point it
crapped out.
Just a thought...
