I cannot speak to the status of applets being ported - my
experience has also been that there seem to be far fewer. Most of
your issues seem to be related to a fundamental design shift in
Gnome2[1] to remove a lot of the customizations available in
Gnome/GTK1.2 - a decision that a lot of people find pretty
controversial. I initially disagreed with this policy as I missed
a lot of the features and thought of this as "dumbing down" the
UI for non-Linux users, but over time I've become used to the new
look and find it's a clean, functional desktop that I spend more
time using and less time tweaking. I'd still like to see better
theme handling in GTK2 though - I miss my Shiny-Metal.
