FWIW, both Mplayer (built from latest source) and Xine work fine in
fullscreen mode for me.  If the panel stays visible, clicking anywhere
on the root window makes it go away (by giving focus to the video
window, which is fullscreen).  If this doesn't work, perhaps you're
using a different focus mode.  Bringing the video window into focus
(using the task list, Alt+Tab, etc) should make the panel go away.
