I just addressed this issue in an email to debian-user.  The backport
now uses freetype 2.0.9 (from woody) which will work with the
semi-official openoffice.org.  

Basically, if you've already installed the backport, do (with the
backport lines in sources.list):

apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
rm /var/cache/apt/archives/*freetype*
dpkg -r --force-depends libfreetype6 libfreetype6-dev freetype2-demos
apt-get -f install

Now you can install openoffice.org from
http://www.linux-debian.de/openoffice/
