apt-get -u -s install gnome-core ...

The gnome-core meta-package should not require pan, but 'gnome' does. 
Pan is in the gnome2.2 archive though-- you don't need unstable/sid
lines in sources.list.  You do need xfree86 4.2.1 though, which you can
