Ok, that's kind of a drastic solution, you probably could have changed
the default output sink in /system/gstreamer/default/audiosink :)

Are you by any chance using powerpc?  If so, you're likely running into
the gstreamer-0.5.0-on-powerpc bug.  As a workaround, you can use the
gstreamer .debs from my "local" repository:

        deb http://verbum.org/~walters/debian/ local/$(ARCH)/
        deb http://verbum.org/~walters/debian/ local/all/
        deb-src http://verbum.org/~walters/debian/ local/source/ 
        
If you're not using powerpc, then could you try starting rhythmbox on a
terminal, and tell me if there is any output there?
