That's not weird - Linux doesn't support large files yet. It will
be a feature of the 2.4 kernel and it will need a lot of glibc support
which still has to be written as well.

You'll have to wait for the 2.4 kernel and glibc 2.4.0 or so. Perhaps
medio 2000.

Or simply switch to a 64 bit architecture like the Alpha which
doesn't have the silly 32 bits restrictions.
