Fiona 1.7b1 has been released, the first (pre-)release to officially support GDAL 2.x. It took much longer than expected to get released, but it's finally here now. I've uploaded it to unstable to get rid of our heavily patched 1.6 package. The reverse dependencies are limited to python-geopandas, which doesn't seem adversely affected by changes in 1.7b1.
