[DebianGIS] Re: postgis debian packaging
Hi all,
We do need multiple versions of the postgis package anyway, to support
the multi cluster environment that Martin Pitt created for postgresql.
The older versions of postgresql (7.4 and 8.0) will be around for
quite some time because upgrading databases in a production
environment is only done when really needed, not every time when a new
version becomes available.
We discussed the naming issue some time ago (and it is in an unaddressed
bugreport dated 179 days ago), I do think that we need to consider
versioning, maybe not for previous versions, but certainly for future
versions! I do not think it is a good idear is to create new package
names like postgis1 and postgis0. On the same issue, I do not think it
is a good idear to make separate packages out of the utilities and
library inside the postgis tar ball, It is much easier to bundle it
all in a single package for each postgis version and each postgresql
install.
Martin Pitt has come up with a new naming scheme for pg_extensions, I
strongly suggest we follow that.
So please rename to:
postgresql-7.4-postgis version: 0.9.2
postgresql-8.0-postgis version: 0.9.2
postgresql-8.1-postgis version: 0.9.2
postgresql-7.4-postgis version: 1.0.5
postgresql-8.0-postgis version: 1.0.5
postgresql-8.1-postgis version: 1.0.5
The package version number should be the postgis version number! If we
need multiple versions of a single package for a particular pg you can
do something like 0.9.2-1, 0.9.2-2 etc.
Please do follow the setup for different postgresql versions as close
as possible (including pg_wrapper), because it will turn into a
terrible mess if we don't!
However I do agree that postgis 0.9 is not a high priority, so if
dropping it is absolutely neccassary, then that is ok.
Having postgis back in debian should be a VERY high priority, let's
try to get this done before the end of the year.
Communicate why you need to change the name to the ftp masters and it
should not be a problem, since Alex is the only package maintainer.
Regards,
Floris
