If you look at mapserver bug 1354 [1] you can see that this problem
seems to be solved with mapserver 4.6. So I would suggest that we
don't invest to much effort into a solution for mapserver 4.4 but
just wait until 4.6 has been released (probably before the 16th of
June which is the start of the UMN MapServer User Meeting). Then we
can repackage the mapserver and include PHP support that time.
