Well just read the mailing list one more time - looks like
the new postgis java library in the upcoming rc2 should be backward
compatible with the old releases.

There are only some test failures reported - but they are related
with different handling of multigeometries in the old release.

Quote form the postgis list for the jdbc driver:

It _should_ be source code and binary compatible with the old code. It
is slightly tested, but I hope to get more test coverage from you. :-)
