building for the first time

I'm still green, but eager to optimize this stuff for my Debian 3.0 on a 
K6-2.  Thinking that gcc is the first step in the process . . . .

Have been trying to build 2.95.x and 3.0.x from dpkg-source -x *.dsc: deps 
seem to be in order, but I have come-up with much more confusion that is 
necessary (1600+ unexpected FAILs in testsuite, &c).

Any suggestions for building (and optimizing)?
