Beware that (likely due to that wave of attention few years back) some
partitioning tools have since improved their defaults to more often be 
well aligned.

Not sure where I read that, but I do recall that when checking 
changelog of a few of the tools it wasn't easy to spot there :-/

The best place I have found for concrete testing notes was the OLPC 
wiki: http://wiki.laptop.org/go/SDCard_Testing (you may also find the 
more general NAND_Testing page interesting).

Try deliberately force bad values, to learn how badly (or not) it 
affects performance.
