There is indeed reason to be cautious about NAND and mainline Linux.  
That very link you provide above, however, seems to mention _some_ NAND 
support being mainlined in 3.19.

Not only Linux kernel need to support boot from NAND, U-boot does too 
(unless you wanna chainload - boot a NAND-capable botloader from uSD).
