[Freedombox-discuss] Why plug servers and not smart phones?
I believe most are talking about the security issue of having a box that is
not as available to governments to get a hold of. Most countries have some
type of protection about the home, although dictators obviously not...
It's also a cost/power decision, as the phone are much more powerful, but
can you get information on a great number of the internals. In other words
are there proprietary chips inside that we don't have access? This happens
more than you would think, and we have that problem with the Dreamplug as
we cannot get even a schematic of the device without signing a NDA (Non
Disclosure Agreement). So I don't know how it was chosen...
As these phones grow, maybe some people would like to spend the monies and
develop on these devices, but I don't think they are financially in our
reach or the type of platform that many of us want to develop on. Have you
tried to get information such as all the chips and schematics of the whole
thing? Usually that's a problem and it hinders development. As it has
with the Dreamplug, which is low cost and has a ported Linux already
available from which to work.
