As time goes on the functionality that a walled garden can offer you will
reach a ceiling, for them to remain profitable.

Free software can offer unlimited functionality in the long term.  Not to
mention privacy, which it's shown at least 1 in 4 people feel strongly
about.

Just need a strategy to grow the network effect.  Grow virally perhaps?
