[Freedombox-discuss] FreedomBox Testing 2012.0617 Image Published
Well... FreedomBox, at its essence, is a piece of software (a blend of
Debian). There are certain pieces of hardware that we've targeted, but
the software should be able to run on just about any reasonably powerful
general purpose computer. So the answer depends on the particular
hardware in question.
If we are talking about the dreamplug, which is the general reference
hardware, then I believe it to be unlikely that any reasonably usable
mesh will be formed using the onboard wifi radios. Certainly it could be
done in a limited way -- the problem is scaling. The solution that I
suggest to this problem is to attach hardware such as the dreamplug to a
purpose-built transponder unit (I call this FreedomNode).
There is a lot of flexibility/complexity here. What you suggest is
possible, but not as straightforward as simply letting the boxes talk to
one another using their onboard radios.
