The New York Times has an article today on efforts by
the US Government to support /alternate/ Internet
communication strategies [0]. (I hope this page is
accessible to everyone)

This is an articulation of our big objective #2 as
discussed by Bdale:

2. FreedomBox to facilitate independent, private,
   decentralized communications.

In the popular press there is a fascination with
solo computer wizards with tatoos, piercings, etc.
Full attribution of "building on the shoulders
of giants" is light:

    The project will also rely on the innovations of
    independent Internet and telecommunications developers.
