I've attached six screenshots. The "nostemdarken" screenshots use that package; the "stemdarken" screenshots use 2.6-2. For each, I've provided screenshots with hintfull, hintslight, and the autohinter. I also checked gnome-terminal with DejaVu Sans, and I don't see any rendering issues with the new package. While I'd still love to see crisper rendering (and I'll likely continue enabling autohint for Cantarell), these packages do provide a noticeable improvement to rendering quality, and reduce the amount of smear on stems.
