libc 4 is not Y2K compliant.  Use libc 5 instead if you need to
use it instead of glibc.  Unless they mention a.out
specifically, it probably has nothing to do with a.out vs. ELF.

Slackware is a libc 5 based distribution, while glibc based
distributions like debian normally provide compatibility
libraries for libc 5 binaries, so you might find that ipfilter
works on debian unchanged.

I have never used ipfilter, nor tried to compile it, so don't
take what I say as absolute truth :)
