Yeah, this is a long-running debate...should Debian provide only the
basics and let users install everything else from the internet, or
should Debian provide a curated and supported subset of various
package archives.  I'm in the latter camp, but personally I think that
it would be wonderful if it was easier to grab up-to-date browser
plugins and ELPA packages on Debian stable

Re: the value in a Debian-packaged curated subset of MELPA and GNU
Elpa: Trust (not random unsigned code off of github), and
compatibility--we have a team dedicated to making sure they work
properly with each other, and to work with all of the upstreams to
make this a reality.  Worst-case scenario explicit breaks would be
declared.  

Sean, did you ever write a blog post or short paper about the vision
and scope of dh-elpa?  It would be nice if this was more visible to
users.  I've been asked about it at least a dozen times this last
year ;-)
