IMO, this is probably just historical cruft we have to deal with,
unless as you say, we're going to add a dpkg --status, or whatever to
check for the old versions.  I know in the "old days" you weren't
supposed to invoke dpkg recursively.  Is that no longer true?

I suppose, if dpkg is a no-no, we could always use some other test,
say checking for /usr/bin/emacs19 or similar...
