Bug#920861: Use same $HOSTNAME for hosts on LAN and WiFi

Package: debian-edu-config
Version: 2.10.58
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

at the schools we maintain in Schleswig-Holstein, we regularly run into an issue that becomes more and more pressing.

We add puppet on top of Debian Edu to maintain the system over the years and deploy customer requested changes on top of Debian Edu systems.

Puppet is really picky on the $HOSTNAME of a system that has been joined to the puppet master server. That is, hostname and puppet certificate CN must match.

This becomes really problematic on systems that flip-flop regarding their IP address / hostname. We support several workstations that are sometimes used on the LAN and sometimes on the WiFi network. The Debian Edu hostname update mechanism let's these host flip-flop between the DNS name for their LAN IP and the DNS name for the WiFi IP.

We recommend to customers using a name pattern where the LAN IP is assigned to "<hostname>" and the WiFi IP is assigned to "<hostname>-wifi", if hosts are more often on LAN than on WiFi.

For hosts, being more online on WiFi, we recommand "<hostname>" for the WiFi IP and "<hostname>-lan" for the LAN IP.

This could all be avoided if the update-hostname-from-ip could be taught the above (or a similar) hack.

Is this something, we can provide via Debian Edu directly? Our alternative here is to override update-hostname-from-ip with dpkg-divert here locally, which I would like to avoid.

Request for feedback and comments,
Thanks,
Mike
