Not sure about the first one (above). Seems to be some inter-package (d-e-c and d-e-i) dependency issue. Where does the /etc/debian-edu/config file get created?

This one is easy: Note that the maximum length for a NetBIOS name is 15 charactars. (from man 5 smb.conf, see "netbios name" option).
