Thin clients or Diskless WS?

Hi,

We are planning to use skolelinux after summer. Problem is, we have some clients that are a bit slow, so we need to do an upgrade. The budget is, of course, a bit tight.

I have tried the HP t5630. It has 1GB memory and a 1 ghz proc. Problem is it also uses the via VX800 unified chip. The support for that seems to be a bit jerky when it comes to Debian. It worked with squeeze for some time, but after the latest kernelupdate it does not work anymore. I guess its possible to make it work, but it seems a bit unstable at the moment.

The other option is buying some used computers, like these ones;

They are not much more expensive, but of course they take some more power and makes some more noise. I dont have any real experience of running a full setup of diskless workstations. It will be something like 25 of them (+50 thinclients).

Honestly I have a problem making a descission. I prefer thinclients, but we are not prepared to buy new ones, and if we are going to buy, at least they have to be at the same standard as t5630 or better, othervise they will not be much better then the ones we have (as T5530 and Siemens A230). So T5630 seems to be the type that are easy available used for a descent price.

Im just asking for advice. Biased or not.

/George
