Right, good point.  Why do we need userPassword and sambaNTHash?  I
thought samba used Kerberos, and did expect everything else to use
Kerberos too.

Yeah.  I had a bug report asking for a hook in Kerberos to allow it to
update other password sources on updates, but have not tracked the
status of this report for a long time.  Perhaps it is fixed in Wheezy?
