This sound like some related package is missing from the gnome package
list.  Check svn, debian/edu/tasks/.  But lack of network-manager seem
to be unrelated to a completely broken gnome desktop, and thus deserve a
separate bug report. :)

(or just fix it in the debian-edu package if you figure out how to fix
it. :)
