Oh.

So basically, what the minimal profile needs is installation of
network-manager during d-i.

Right.  How do you get network-manager to configure IP using DHCP during
boot and not when a user log in?  I ask because I need this elsewhere,
and have not found a way to get it working so far.  If this is working,
we can install network-manager on all profiles except the main-server.
