browser races

Dear All,

Thanks for all the hard work you are putting in lately.

I have some concerns about browsers that might affect other schools,

A few days ago hotmail stopped working with iceweasel (skolelinux
lenny - 3.0.6 I think it is) again. This time it can't be fixed by
user-agent-string tweaks. A significant number of students use hotmail
for school work here.

Yahoo mail users have to use the 'classic' version, or they can't send
attachments.

Recently I received a message from Google Apps (we use apps for
education to provide our e-mail and document sharing, as do several
other international schools I know) stating that, after August, apps
would stop working with Firefox <4 (or any other stable browser by
the look of it)

Today on /. I read that FF5 is out. 5? I haven't even tried 4 yet!

The google chrome that I have to use to admin the google apps
(Iceweasel doesn't work fully) is telling me that lenny is obsolete,
so it can no longer update. I need to keep updating it because of the
August deadline mentioned above. Anyway, this should go away with
squeeze, I'm sure, so ignore this one.

So it seems that browsers are expected to be updated every few months
nowadays! It might not be possible to even complete a school year with
one version and still have everyone's apps/mail/ who knows what
working. How would you manage this kind of thing on a skolelinux
network? Create a local apt repo? Install from testing or unstable?
How would you perform the updates on the individual workstations and
servers all at once?

cheers

nigel
