after the close-tag should read as:
The space is introduced in the conversion by a sed "s%<\/%\n<\/%g"
command which breaks lines in the xml-file _before_ the close-tag.

PS: Perhaps we can correct (sed) *.po files in advance to
avoid the fuzzies?
