I seriously doubt that. 

We have to have the 486 kernel only for those people running ancient hardware.

LTSP works fine with 686.

That kernel is not redundant. On the contrary it's absolutly needed to use 
dual or quad cores and it's also needed to use more than 1 GiB of RAM.
