Summary: Sitewide changes to proxy settings do not affect PXE,
APT and /etc/environment
Product: Skolelinux
Version: lenny-test
Platform: All
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: debian-edu-config
AssignedTo: debian-edu@lists.debian.org
ReportedBy: pere@hungry.com
The file http://wpad/wpad.dat is used to configure the proxy settings for the
entire site, and the content is used by browsers at run time (both iceweasel
and konqueror), and used to set/update the values used in /etc/environment,
/etc/apt/apt.conf and /etc/debian-edu/www/debian-edu-install.dat during
installation.
When a system administrator changes the settings in wpad.dat, this do not
take automaticaly effect for APT, PXE and all programs using the setting
from /etc/environment. This differ from how Microsoft Internet Explorer
and Windows with AD works, where the proxy setting for everything can
be controlled centrally through AD.
I believe we should add a init.d script or a cron job to make sure the rest of
the system settings are changed when the wpad.dat file is changed, to avoid
surprising system administrators who reasonably expect modifying wpad.dat
should affect all systems using the proxy setting.
