Yes, I meant diskless workstation.

Could the problem be that nslcd isn't running?  I ran into this problem
on a non-default network setup, where the SRV entries were missing and reverse
DNS lookup of the diskless workstation IP address failed.  The latter made the
host name 'ltsp', which nslcd refused to work with.  The former made nslcd fail
to find the LDAP server.
