Tjener: Space Consumption Analysis on home0
Dear list,
please excuse my ignorance, but possibly I missed something
(or my experience is just too weak):
What kind of analysis tools do we provied for "half-wise" admins
(like myself) who needs detailed statistics on space consumption
in home directories?
This is the background:
Usually, I run "du -x /skole/tjener/home0 |sort -n | tail -40" to spot
the largest directories. It's no problem to run that command every night
and log its results, of course.
But now, I encounter more and more types of files that are not really
big by themselves (like 10-30 MB) but as they exist in nearly every home
directory, they consume more than 10% of disk space.
What tools come into your minds that might be apt for such statistics:
- show me the file that has the most identical copies/consumes the
most disk space in total
- show me what file types (by extension) take the most space
- show me what directory names (or relative paths) bear the most bytes
...
But maybe we are just too old-fasioned, providing only 80 GB for 800
Users, the 100 MB quota is exceeded easily nowadays...
Thanks,
regards
Ralf
