I had a closer look, and the problem seem to be that we have only halfway
migrated thin clients to use pulseaudio, by installing the packages required
but not looking over the configuration.

when a user log in on a thin client, ESPEAKER is set by the client, while
the esound package is not installed on the thin client server (while
pulseaudio-esound-compat is installed).

Not quite sure what is missing to get pulseaudio to provide /dev/dsp or any
other mechanism used by programs, but we should fix that before release to
avoid regression with fewer applications working with sound in lenny than in
etch.
