How silly of me, I overlooked the little problem of booting into the system
to invoke 'mount' :)

Perhaps the easiest would be to boot from CD and use the available
partitioning tools, such as fdisk, sfdisk, cfdisk or parted, to view the
partitions on disc.
If you have a small ext3/ext2 partition try mounting it to view the files in
it and check for a grub directory in it, that would indicate if it may be
used as the /boot partition.

I would recommend using SysRescueCD, a very handy live CD and once you start
the GUI you can use gparted to view (and edit) the disc partitions.

It should also be posible to view the list of existing partitions from the
Debian installer through expert install by selecting the partition disk
drives menu item and completing the required steps. Then selecting manual
partition the hard disk.
