[Bug 1394] New: Installs yield malfunctioning boot sequence

http://bugs.skolelinux.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1394

Summary: Installs yield malfunctioning boot sequence
           Product: Skolelinux
           Version: woody-release-1.0r1
          Platform: x86
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: NEW
          Severity: critical
          Priority: P5
         Component: debian-edu-install
        AssignedTo: debian-edu@lists.debian.org
        ReportedBy: alneumann@verizon.net
                CC: alneumann@verizon.net

Hello!
I wish I could send you a log but I don't know how to get it off the linux
box... and send via this Vista client. (I'm a linux newbie so don't even know
how to get a 'sneaker' network going between the systems.)

Install attempts of the SERVER yields a system that does not get thru the
text-based boot routines. The words flash on screen so fast that I can't get a
reading... although once I believe I may have seen it 'crumble' when it got to
something related to loading video (?) Once it 'stalls', I am able to 'jockey'
things until I get a text screen login. Then, logging into root, I've tried
"startx" but it only fails to find "/etc/X11/X" -Yes, not "Xsession" but just
"X". (This appears to indicate that an "X" file is missing -?)

Upon 'successful' install for the freestanding WORKSTATION I do get into the
GUI, however I find I always hit error. "Debconf on localhost: Some errors were
found in installation. error: status=0x05 {Drive Ready Seek Complete Data
request}, error: status..." -repeated four times within a regular GUI window
message. Of course the CLIENT install rejects not finding a Server, and the
THIN CLIENT is not what is need here.

I find this error is hit during the boot

Note that hardware includes; P-III 1000mhz CPU, 1GB ram, 14GB maxtor drive, and
a PNY Verto (nVidia) GeForce 6200 256MB AGP graphics card. -This is nothing
unusual so I assume it's all compatible, although once booted into the
WORKSTATION I see the only video resolutions offered are 320x200 & 640x400.
(We're accustomed to 1024x768 or 1280x1024) In addition, I've already run
scandisk AND a full low level Maxtor format, prior to add'l install attempts,
to be certain the drive is not 'flukey'. Otherwise, note that this same system
has successfully loaded multipel other linux systems over the last few days,
for over all testing of OSs for potential use here.

Please advise on:
1) If this is a known bug... w/ particular resultion(s). (I couldn't find
anything related thru Bugzilla search.)
2) If you suspect video issues what might I add, for example, to grub menu.lst
parameters (or otherwise) to perhaps reduce potential video conflict. Note:
I've already tried a RESCUE install over numerous different install attmpts, as
well as mixed w/ some F-key (4-8) options, but I found it yields the same
problem as w/ the SERVER install.
3) Is an "X" and/or other file missing, based on above-described findings?
4) Should we expect to attain higher video resolutions?
5) How might I actually get a copy of the error.log(s) onto a diskette for
transfer to an MS system? (For possible attachement) i.e.: Is the format of
the diskette different from Linux to MS...? ALTHOUGH, please do not simply
advise on this first and not advise to 1-4 above.

Thanks.
Al alneumann@verizon.net
