Debian Edu Etch Installer with newer kernel

Hello all,

I have a qestion to the developers on this list with knowledge about the
CD/DVD creation process:

Our problem is that the Etch Installer often fails to detect the
harddisks / drives of new servers because the kernel is too old.
Since we have to stay with Etch for several reasons
(ones I don't want to discuss in this thread)
and because we don't like to apply preinstalled tarballs with the help
of a live system, we would like to create an installer with a newer
kernel (e.g. 2.6.26 or so)

What would be the right / best approach to get the Debian Edu Installer
for Etch with a newer kernel?
Somehow remaster an existing CD/DVD-Image, or build a new one with CDD
or however the Debian Edu Images are being created?

And what would be a rough estimate how long it would take?

I didn't have time to look into this closer, that's why I'm asking right
away, please excuse me.
A few weeks ago I completed my NM process, so I'm not completely
incapable ;) only with little spare time.

Of course, if we create this installer with the newer kernel, we would
give it back to the community.
I'm sure there are others who could make use of this until the Lenny
version is ready.

Kind Regards,
