[Bug 1348] New: Have different subnets for LTSP servers

http://bugs.skolelinux.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1348

Summary: Have different subnets for LTSP servers
           Product: Skolelinux
           Version: lenny-test
          Platform: Other
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: NEW
          Severity: enhancement
          Priority: P2
         Component: Installation system
        AssignedTo: debian-edu@lists.debian.org
        ReportedBy: rgx@gmx.de

This is a wish, raised by system administrators who install additional services
(like italc) to Skolelinux installations (professional support companies):

Accordingly it is impossible to send messages to thin clients when there are
more than one clients having identical IPs (e.g. 192.168.0.1). This design was
done to keep installation simple (all LTSP subnets have the same subnet).

I suppose it is not very hard to make LTSP's dhcpd work like this:
- If my IP is 10.0.2.10 serve subnet 192.168.0.x
- If my IP is 10.0.2.11 serve subnet 192.168.1.x
- If my IP is 10.0.2.12 serve subnet 192.168.2.x
...

I don't think that this would contradict to load balancing LTSP clouds (rather
not because you have even more possible clients to serve this way).

ltspserver00 is commonly used for 10.0.2.10 -- and there is no
problem if due to individual IP settings more than one LTSP is yet using the
same subnet (e.g. 192.168.254.x).

This configuration must probably be hooked in after dhcpclient script.

Does this make sense - or does it rather make things more difficult?
It could also make sense to distribute a script that can be activated
optionally.
