You could also try gamin. From its long description:

Gamin has been designed as a drop-in replacement for FAM with security 
and maintainability in mind and can use Linux's advanced inotify service 
when available.

Don't know if FAM has improved since, to a point that the above is no 
longer relevant, but worth a try.
