Could you please try to do a

    sudo aptitude purge cdd-common

I could. But I don't think it would made any difference.
cdd-common wasn't installed when this pb first occured, I installed it later.

between these steps. In principle it should not matter whether
cdd-common is installed or not but I'm afraid that some broken
Installation of cdd-common causes some problem on you machine.

No, the pb was there before I installed cdd-common.

Setting up education-astronomy (0.825) ...
err 67: Custom distribution education does not exist
dpkg: error processing education-astronomy (--configure):

Are there any files hanging around in

     /etc/cdd/education

on your machine?

This where the trouble is :

$ ls -l /etc/cdd/
total 4
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 425 oct 23 2006 cdd.conf

and education-astronomy is clearly expecting something here.
Is a "mkdir /etc/cdd/education" a correct way to fix it or is there some better way.

.... Kind regards and thanks for your input
