It  does not work with excludes as expected, at least not if you try stuff like 
  exclude /home/**/.local/share/Trash/*

The test was done on a standalone installed workstation, trying to exclude stuff
from the local users' trash

the exclude on the rdiff-commandline ended up as 
 --exclude /home.local/share/trash/*

I Also tried as
 exclude    '/home/**/.local/share/trash/*'

I've now verified that it doesn't work, so I've reassigned the bug to d-e@l.d.o
