Thanks for your bug report!

I'm downgrading the priority as you already describe the workaround 
yourself :-)

I'm not even sure if we should try to fix this in etch, or just document it 
(=the workaround) the etch manual. 

Is this something which needs to be reported in the debian-installer bts 
(because it can be fixed there)?
