This would seem to be the 'magic' that did it. Some program runs the
'mount -t vfat ...' command after the device is found.

It would seem to be the 'usbmount' program that is missing.
if you do 'dpkg --get-selections usbmount' to see if its installed. Also
for info do:
apt-cache show usbmount
for the description.
