Kiosk profiles are great, even greater if they are networked.
If you have a directory for (site-specific) shared configurations on the server
you can tweak your site-wide kiosk configs in one single place, on the server.
(/usr/share/etc/... was proposed)
Summary, the two steps to implement this issue #1004 are:
1) with the server profile, create the directory /usr/share/etc and include it
in the NFS exports (read only).
2) in the workstation profile, add tjener:/usr/share/etc to the existing
automount config.
As Cobaco pointed out, it is then possible to point all machines to side wide
kde(kiosk)/gnome/xfce/... configs somewhere under /usr/share/etc/, simply by
adding a .listing file on the workstations.
Even distributing those .listing files could be made unnecessary if
desktop-profiles could check for .listing files
under /usr/share/etc/desktop-profiles. Then it would be enough to place a
profile on the server, to enjoy it on all workstations, thinclient-servers,
thin-clients, and lessdisk-clients.
Transition to centralize existing debian-edu configuration, could follow later:
- in sever profile, install stuff currently in /usr/share/debian-edu
under /usr/share/etc/debian-edu
- in the workstation profile, either tweak debian-edu's .listing file
under /etc/desktop-profiles to points to the new
location under /usr/share/etc, or add another .listing file to include
site-specific additions from /usr/share/etc/debian-edu/, (or best? let
desktop-profile pick up .listing files in /usr/share/etc/desktop-profiles
automatically)
- For those files that are now provided centrally, stop installing them
in /usr/share/debian-edu with the workstation profile, delete existing
unchanged files during updates, rename customized ones. (Centlization may
increase the dependance on a functional server, but without server there is no
login in debian-edu anyway ;-)
